淡江大學 - Tamkang University

August 2020 - May 2021

For the 2020-21 school year I took a gap year and studied abroad on a full scholarship from the US Department of State in New Taipei City, Taiwan at Tamkang University, 淡江大學 (Please see NSLI-Y Scholarship in the Accolades section for more information on the scholarship program). As a NSLI-Y scholar, I increased my Mandarin proficiency from it’s initial Intermediate-Mid oral Chinese Proficiency level to Advanced Mid, according to the ACTFL proficiency scale. While abroad, I built lifelong connections with the friends I made through volunteer work, school activities, and my host family.

As a recipient of the National Security Language Initiative for Youth  Summer scholarship from the State Department to study Mandarin at 双流中学实验学校 (The Experimental School of Shuangliu) to be fully immersed with a host family in the Chinese language and culture. As a junior in high school, this life-changing experience solidified my passions for studying Chinese language and culture.

Honors and Awards: Unanimously nominated by the school administration to give a speech on behalf of the scholarship recipients to 550 people in both English and Mandarin.
